Женя был осужден еще суровее: он рано узнал, что ему отмерена более короткая сознательная жизнь, чем «среднечеловеческая». Но жил он именно так, как написал Маршак: наперекор всему. Жил мужественно, никогда никому не жалуясь. Если и жалел себя, то только в уединении. Это был сильный мужской характер. Такой, как описывали Джек Лондон, Эрнест Хэмингуэй, Василь Быков. И при этом он имел любящее и отзывчивое сердце. Редкое сочетание мужественности и добросердечия.

Eugene faced an even harsher fate: he learned early on that his conscious life would be shorter than the average person's. Yet he lived exactly as Marshak wrote: in defiance of everything. He lived courageously, never complaining to anyone. If he ever felt self-pity, it was only in solitude. He possessed a strong character — the kind described by Jack London, Ernest Hemingway, Vasil Bykov. And yet, he had a loving and responsive heart — a rare combination of strong character and gentle kindness.

Funeral services were held in private.
