It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Joseph Gambino, a beloved husband, brother, and friend, on Easter Sunday, April 5, 2026, in Toronto, Ontario. Born on March 24, 1966, in Toronto, Joe lived a life defined by love, laughter, and deep connection.
Joe is survived by his devoted wife, Cathy, and is now reunited with his parents, Angelo Raffaele and Maria. He will be dearly missed by his loving sisters Rita (George Spizzirri), Bruna (David Miller), and Pina (Max Hansen). He was a cherished son-in-law to Conrad (Dee LeDrew) and a beloved brother-in-law to Kelly (Shahz Beig) and Conrad (Daniela Marlin). Proud Zio to Vanessa Marie (Michael Furfari), Alexander, Daniel David (Diandra Sladen), Mathew Andreas, Samantha (Paloma Spizzirri), Robert Raffaele, Danyal, and Haylie, and an honoured godfather to many, Joe took immense pride in his family.
As the youngest, and only boy among three sisters, Joe was adored from the very beginning. While he may have been his parents’ favourite, he was just as much the favourite of his sisters, who stood by him through every chapter of his life. The bond they shared was unwavering, filled with humour, loyalty, and deep love.
Joe had a remarkable gift for friendship. From his earliest school days, he formed bonds that lasted a lifetime. Whether it was sneaking out in his sister’s car for late-night burgers and ice cream, hosting steak nights and poker games, traveling to New York or New Orleans, enjoying morning dog walks, or simply relaxing in the backyard with a drink in hand, Joe embraced every moment and made it meaningful. People were naturally drawn to him, he had a way of making everyone feel included, comfortable, and part of something special.
Family was at the heart of everything Joe did. He was deeply involved in the lives of his nieces and nephews, always ready to stir up a little mischief and ensure that time together was always fun. Whether on family trips to Europe, during tomato season, at basketball games, music-filled sleepovers, or Sunday lunches with Nonna, “Uncle Joe” was at the centre of it all, creating memories that will be cherished forever.
He began his professional journey developing film at Blacks before moving into environmental work, helping clean up hazardous sites. His career quickly evolved into corporate consulting, where he had the opportunity to travel extensively. Later, he transitioned into the tech sector, building his thoughtful, solutions-focused approach into every aspect of his life.
Curious by nature and driven to understand how things worked, Joe built a career in engineering that reflected exactly who he was. He was the one people turned to when something had a problem, because if it was fixable, Joe would find a way. A natural problem solver, he approached challenges with patience, thoughtfulness, and a calm confidence that put others at ease. Conversations with Joe often began with a familiar “Listen…,” followed by practical advice, different perspectives, and a clear path forward.
Joe approached life with enthusiasm and a sense of fun that was truly infectious. Known affectionately as “Joey Two-Dawgs”, a playful nod to his Gambino roots and his love of dogs, he embraced both humour and identity with ease. His bond with his beloved dog TJ was especially strong, reflecting his deep affection for animals and companionship.
He also had a distinct sense of style and took pride in how he presented himself. Always a sharp dresser, Joe elevated his style even further after meeting Cathy, who brought out an added spark and joy in his life.
From opening a comic book store to indulge his inner nerd, to traveling to beaches and vibrant cities, Joe lived fully and intentionally. He loved sports, especially cheering on the Toronto Raptors, and could often be found following the Blue Jays, managing his Fantasy Football teams, or getting swept up in March Madness. An avid golfer, he enjoyed staying active while also hosting friends as the ultimate grill master. His backyard pool parties were legendary, filled with good food, friends, and memories that will last a lifetime. He also stayed active through yoga, fitness classes, and his signature speed walks, and never missed a chance to try something new, recently taking up curling and pickleball.
When he wasn’t on the move, Joe loved relaxing with a good show. A devoted fan of Survivor, he also kept up with the latest and greatest TV series, always ready to discuss plots, characters, and twists with friends and family.
Joe found his greatest joy in love. Later in life, he met Cathy, his “unicorn”, through a high school connection, and together they built a relationship filled with humour, partnership, and deep affection. Cathy re-energized Joe’s passion for life, and their time together, though far too short, was filled with joy. Through Cathy, Joe embraced new family and friendships, leaving a lasting impression on all who came to know him.
Joe’s life was enriched by a wide circle of friends and family who formed a vibrant, loving community around him. His warmth, humour, and generosity of spirit touched countless lives. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Joe leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, joy, and determination. May his memory continue to bring comfort and inspiration, and may he rest in eternal peace.
