It is with great sadness that we share that Yung-Ja (Kim) Kwak passed away peacefully at the age of 79 on October 22, 2025.
Yung-Ja’s journey began in Mokpo, South Korea, where her adventurous spirit led her to Hamburg, Germany, to study nursing at a young age. There, she began a path marked by courage, sacrifice, and strength.
After marrying, “Young” (as she was known to many, embracing not only her name but also her youthful outlook in life and spirit) embarked on a new chapter in Canada, dedicated to building a life for her family and reuniting her parents, five brothers and sisters. Though she worked tirelessly and gave selflessly, her joy for life always shone brightly.
She was a true Korean ambassador, sharing the traditions of hospitality and warmth with everyone she met. She helped countless Koreans settle into their new homes in Canada. She offered guidance, comfort, and a sense of belonging. Through her gentle smiles, laughter and generosity, she made strangers and family alike feel that Canada was home.
Her heart was as radiant as the jewelry she crafted and as colourful as her fashion and flowers that she adored. She loved shopping, swimming, karaoke, golfing and spending time with her sisters and brothers to make up for the time they had missed while apart. She cherished travelling, exploring new restaurants and catching up with family and friends.
Yung-Ja’s greatest pride and joy were her three children, each a testament to her love, strength, and sacrifices. Aa-Na (Tom Tomovski), Edward (Sofia Zlatar), and Gerald. She was a proud 할머니, grandmother to her three grandchildren: Isabella, Kaya, and Soo-Kii. She will be fondly remembered for crocheting cute hats/outfits, indoor picnics, singing loudly and early “sneaky” morning walks to Tim Horton's for hot chocolate and timbits.
Even after her diagnosis with ALS, she met it with faith and fierce determination. She faced every challenge with grace and resilience, defying expectations. Showing her family and caregivers what true courage looks like. A true fighter who lived beyond limits with a kind heart and a sense of humour. Her warmth, kindness, and laughter will forever live in the hearts of those she touched.
Yung-Ja is free and “young” again in heaven. She is joyfully reunited with her parents, dancing, singing and enjoying all her favourite foods once more. Her song of life continues in the hearts of those she loved, and her spirit dances freely in heaven.
In keeping with moms wishes, a private service will be held on November 5. The family warmly asks friends to remember her in their thoughts and prayers on Wednesday, honouring her beautiful life and the kindness she shared so generously.
In memory of Yung-Ja, and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ALS Society.
